How to Become a Doctor in India After Completing MBBS from Uzbekistan

Studying MBBS abroad, particularly in Uzbekistan, has become a popular choice for many Indian students due to its affordable tuition fees and high-quality education. However, after completing an MBBS degree in Uzbekistan, students must follow specific procedures to practice medicine in India. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you navigate the process effectively.

1. Eligibility Criteria for Practicing in India

Before returning to India, ensure that you meet the eligibility requirements set by the National Medical Commission (NMC) of India:

  • Your MBBS degree must be recognized by the NMC.

  • You should have completed a mandatory internship as required by the medical university.

  • You must pass the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) or the National Exit Test (NExT), as per the latest regulations.

2. Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE)

The FMGE is a licensing exam conducted by the National Board of Examinations (NBE). It is mandatory for foreign medical graduates to pass this exam before practicing medicine in India.

  • The FMGE is held twice a year (June and December).

  • Candidates need to score at least 50% (150 out of 300 marks) to pass.

  • The exam consists of multiple-choice questions covering pre-clinical, para-clinical, and clinical subjects.

3. National Exit Test (NExT) – A Possible Replacement for FMGE

The Indian government is planning to replace FMGE with the National Exit Test (NExT). This exam will serve as:

  • A common qualifying exam for Indian and foreign medical graduates.

  • A licensing exam to practice in India.

  • A gateway for PG medical admissions in India.

4. Internship Requirements in India

After passing the FMGE/NExT, foreign medical graduates must undergo a mandatory 12-month internship in an NMC-approved hospital or medical college in India. This step ensures that graduates gain practical experience in the Indian healthcare system.

5. Registration with the State Medical Council

Once the internship is completed, candidates need to register with the State Medical Council or the Medical Council of India (MCI). After registration, they receive a permanent license to practice medicine in India.

6. Pursuing Post-Graduation in India

For those who wish to specialize further, foreign medical graduates can appear for the NEET-PG exam to secure a seat in a postgraduate medical course in India.

Final Thoughts

Completing an MBBS degree in Uzbekistan is a good option for Indian students looking for affordable medical education. However, clearing the FMGE/NExT and completing an internship in India are crucial steps in becoming a licensed doctor. Proper planning and preparation for these exams can ensure a smooth transition into the Indian medical system.
